University of East London (UEL), a public university can be traced back to when Westham technical institute was established in 1892 which was then changed to Westham college of Technology In 1952, then 1952 the name changed to North East London Polytechnic, while in 1989, it was changed to Polytechnic of East London, finally in 1992, this institute gained its university status.

The University motto is Scientiaetvotorumimpletio (English meaning: knowledge and the fulfillment of vows) headed by ShabirRanderee who’s the chancellor and Amanda Broderick who’s the vice-chancellor of the school. The total number of Academic staff is 716; while the total number of students is 13,395 (Undergraduate – 9,750; Post-graduate – 3,645) according statistical record in 2018/19.

Also the University of East London offers degrees for both undergraduate and post-graduate (including masters, degrees) single honor program is offered as well as an extended degree program. In the extended degree program, a year is always added to the initial three years of regular programs. Not only that, UEL also offers degree in research work (PhDs and Mphils). Moreover, UEL has about seven teaching schools including the graduate schools of which they are listed below;

  • School of Arts and the Digital Industries: The school courses covered by the School of Arts and Digital Industries are digital arts and communications, design, theater and dance, music, fine art and media, creative writing, filming, fashion, performing art, games design and animation, journalism, cultural and heritage art and advertising.
  • Royal Docks School of Business and Law (RDSBL): This school is located mainly at Stratford campus but also delivers programs at Dockland campus. RDSBL is a combined school which offers degree programs for both Post-graduate and undergraduate as well as non-degree programs for companies. Professional bodies like ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountant), CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), CMI (Chartered Management Institute) accredit the programs RDSBL is offering to students. Not only that, the school also offers enterprises development services, wide range of business support and conferencing facilities.
  • School of Social Science: Sociology, Politics and NGOs, Psychosocial studies, innovation studies, Social enterprises and international development are the various disciplines the School of Social Sciences delivers for students ( Undergraduate and post-graduate).
  • School of Psychology: They offerprograms such as BSc (Hons) Counseling and Mentoring, BSc (Hon) Psychology recognized by the British Psychological Society, and counseling training qualification.
  • School of Computing, Engineering and Architecture: was established in 2011, it offers undergraduate programs in computing, architecture, civil engineering, mathematics, electrical and electronic engineering and product design.
  • School of Health, Sport and Bioscience: delivers teaching in physiotherapy, biochemistry, microbiology, nursing, physiology, health studies, biomedical science, pharmacology, sport science, forensic science, conservation and ecology.
  • School of Education and Communities: This School offer courses within a wide range of community and educational related professions some of which are early childhood, professional education, race and community, cooperative education, social work, teacher education and technology-enhanced learning.
  • Graduate School: The school offers support for research students of postgraduate and scholarly activities.

In national ranking, UEL was ranked 116th and 88th position by Complete and Guardian respectively. While Times Higher Education (THE) ranked University of East London among the top 200 “young universities” and 801-1000 globally. Also the University was awarded with a bronze medal by Teaching Excellence Framework.

QS – a body that base their ranking on how much of a particular university graduate is hired, ranked UEL 701 – 750 position as at 2019

Moreover, in 2014, Research Excellence Framework ranked the University 1st position for its ‘impact in psychology research in UK ‘while in 2018, the Guardian University Guide ranked UEL’s school of architecture and civil engineering 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

University campus

University of East London has just three campuses, two at Stratford and one at Docklands. A campus named barking campus was closed in 2006 before introducing the latest campus was opened in 2013 – University Square Stratford.

Docklands campus – University of East London

The largest and oldest campus in of all other three was opened in 1999, it is located at redeveloped Dockland area, Royal Albert Dock, eastern part of London; the place is closed to water sporting center and rowing course while the Airport in London city is across the dock of the campus.

Accommodation for new students started in 2008 having 1,200 rooms for students in addition to café, shops, open air-fitness suite, a restaurant and launderettes. In March 2012, a twenty-one euro sports center is opened.

Stratford Campus – University of East London

The Stratford Campus, second campus in the University is located around the University House and near the 2012 Olympic Park, few minutes from west end in London. In January 2008, the center for clinical education was opened, operating hand in hand with the Nation Health Service, the only center for chiropodist in London. Popular facilities in the campus are; Information center, Stratford library, Internet cafe-bar.

University Square Stratford campus – University of East London

The newest and third campus of UEL is located in London and was established in 2013 and opened for 2013/2014 academic session. This campus is being shared by Birkbeck University of London and UEL. The campus shared provides shared teaching area for higher education institutions and their partners, offering both part-time and full-time study for students. A mooting room, lecture theatre, performance studios and editing suites are the facilities present in University Square Stratford Campus. In 2014, the building was nominated for Carbuncle cup.



In 2012, a sports-dock was opened in Dockland which was used as training center by USA team during the 2012 Olympic Games. Features in the center include, two indoor sports arenas, cricket bay, two basketball courts, ten badminton courts, two football pitches, netball and volleyball courts, a Sports Cafe, a gym and fitness suite, covered seating space for about 400 people.

The major sport tournament that UEL sport clubs feature is the British Universities and Colleges Sport leagues. While In 2011, BUCS awarded the school for being the most developed university for sport. Sporting activities in the school are monitored by UEL sports.

Students’ Union

The students’ union serve as representative body for students in decision making, provision of services to students, act as the students voice in national debates, under the name University of East London Students’ Union (UELSU). New executive members are choosing every year through voting. The union has organized numbers of societies, campaign, clubs and entertainment. There is a joint partnership between student writers and UEL called e-zine. This union is also a member of the National Union of Students


About 1,200 rooms are present in Dockland campus for students to stay over their period of study. The student’s village on the west is built on a nautical theme accommodating three to five students per flat. These students villages have shared kitchen, living areas and dining: and all the rooms are adorable with a single room rent cost £125 per week while a studio flat cost £164 per. The village is split into two containing the East Student Village, next to UEL’s Sports-Dock where you can view the dock area and the West Student Village, designed by Edward Cullinan, an award-winning architect. Also there are 24 transportations for easy movement of students running, to Stratford. Students really love and praise the transport system.

Library service

The school has two modern libraries one at Stratford and the other at Dockland. The libraries offers wide range of resources to students, facilities that enhance group and personal study, engaging students in having a first class student experience , help students in academic writing , have access to electronic resources like e-journals, e-books and database. Both libraries are open for use 24/7 during term time giving the students opportunity to study at any convenience hour.


Students well-being is one of UEL’s priorities because with learning is easy with healthy lifestyle. Hence, the school has link with the Royal Dock Medical Practice to enable students have quick access to GP services. Sometimes there might be need for students to have specialist service for this reason; the school has connection with NHS services to help students have specialist support when the need arises.

Not only that, there is also psychological counseling and short-term counseling helping students with psychological problems, or other mental problems encouraging them to expressing their feelings so their problems can be solve.

Students with disabilities and other learning difficulties gain support from the Disability and Dyslexia service at UEL. A well-being Service Team is also available for general students.

Student Support Program

This program is established to help students attain their academic expectations by assigning personal tutors to undergraduate, improving students skills in writing , ICT and other skills, students having access to peer support service and help at students hub.

Among the students support program is Track My Future (TMF), a personalized, online platform that aid students in planning and monitoring their time thought their stay in school. The platform did not only monitors but also submit student’s health update, finding part-time job and lots more.

Half of the undergraduate populations are matured students hence, students that are matured, having working experience relating to course of study and showing commitment can be equipped to succeed with the help of UEL. The University also offers programs for those that have been away from education over a long period of time or lack qualifications for entry to achieve their aim, Some of the programs are listed below;

  • New Beginnings; it’s a 12-week part-time course offered for progression to undergraduate programs. New Beginnings will aid students maximize various skills they have acquired from life and work experiences to prepare them ahead studying at higher education.

Moreover, there are Pre-entry courses and foundation years; this program is for those that don’t meet the University entry requirements. So the course will help bridge the gap to allow students starts undergraduate degree.

Admission requirements

University of East London not only accepts country qualifications but also put working experience into consideration when considering application. The personal information and standard of applications is important.

Undergraduate degree

International qualifications that are equivalent to undergraduate requirements by the United Kingdom are considered by UEL. Though, this is equal to the 12/13 years of education at a secondary school in most countries. Applicants may be required to have specific subjects, attend interview or test or give in portfolios before they can be offered some courses.

The application should be online, with payment of £24 as the application Fee, secondary or high school transcript is required, reference letters together with statement of purpose, IETS score of 6.0 plus the IETS UKVI if applicants is not an English native speaker.

Though requirements is not the same for all programs, applicant should visit the school website for further enquires.


UEL accept international qualifications that is equal to lower second class division from an undergraduate degree in a recognized institution, a reference letter, with statement of purpose, IELTS  UKVI, IELTS score of 6.0 and an application fee of £24.

Application deadline

Most times UEL enrolls applicant in January and September for most courses hence, application deadline may be around early December for January intake and for September intake, application close he mid-July. Aspirants must stay update and seek for useful information that will aid intake.

Acceptance rate

University of East London retakes students from about 140 countries and has been ranked 1st position for international support and visa advice in UK. Common wealth and Chevening scholarships are accepted by the University.

English language proficiency

To gain admission into University of East London, applicants must understand and be able speak English language therefore; there must be evidence to show the ability of students to speak the language.  However the school accepts various English language qualifications for different courses, with IELTS being the most common hence, students must meet the requirements for English language.

Pre-sessional English: is a program that UEL offers for students in agreement with Malvern House London. The course is offered for just 5 to 11 weeks by applicants who don’t meet with the IELS requirements in relation to their course of study. It’s not really necessary for students to take the Pre-sessional English course with the University, students should apply for the course of their choice while the school will only decides whether student will need it or not.

The only acceptable English qualifications are: Academic IELTS, TOEFL iBT, IETLS for UKVI, Cambridge IGSCE, Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English and Pearson PTE Academic. The school doesn’t accept IELTS General, IGCSE / GCE O Levels in English, Duolingo, TOEIC and Literature, only English Language is accepted.

Tuition fee and cost of living

In 2018/19 academic session UEL tuition fee for undergraduate is £11,880 for international students and £9,250 for UK citizens MBA tuition fee is £15,450 and Post-graduate students paid £12,850. Cost of living is £9,000 though, this may vary depending on the kind of apartment student prefer.

UEL is a university that wants everybody to get educated irrespective of age, status or family background. Hence, the school provides ways in which students pay their tuition fee without stress some of which are;

  • Student Loan: student from low income family can apply for tuition fee loan if his/her courses start on or after august. For further inquiries visit
  • Early Payment Discount: UEL offers about five percent discount to students who pay their tuition fee early. With this, the University encourages them to pay early and also students can use the remaining 5% for other expenses.
  • Self-Funding and Employer sponsorship: Some employers assist students in paying tuition fees. Under this arrangement, employers agree to pay all or part of tuition fee for course that’s related and beneficial to them.


University of East London helps students from poor house-hold to attain their aim by raising up to £750 towards the payment of their tuition. Many students can also partake in the £2M bursaries and scholarships offered by UEL. Below are list of some of the scholarship UEL offers to students.

  • Welcome Bursary: this kind of bursary is given to students who are just starting their first undergraduate degree, it’s just £140.
  • Family Scholarship: for those that have their immediate family member studied in UEL, they will receive £1000 family scholarship.
  • Care Leaver Bursary: this £1,000 bursary offer is given to students under the age of twenty-five years and who has been under the local authority care.

Sports Scholarships: the University of East London gives out three sport scholarships to students like sport pros to students who participate a lot in a particular sport.
