Silberman School Of Social Work

The Hunter College School of Social Work, now known as the Lois V. and Samuel J. Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, was founded in 1958 and is New York City’s oldest and largest public social work school. The School’s mission is informed by its location within the City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university, and Hunter College, one of CUNY’s five senior colleges. Their mission as part of CUNY is to provide the highest-quality social work education at the lowest possible cost.

Because of the school’s placement in New York City’s metropolitan public system, the school seek out and encourage social work talent for and from the most disadvantaged members of society. Hunter’s commitment to educational access is demonstrated by it’s continued commitment to admit and graduate a diverse student body, primarily from New York City; to maintain affordability by providing financial aid and scholarship opportunities in addition to the already low tuition; to provide students with a wide range of academic opportunities and supports for success; and to strive for multi-layered diversity in the student body, faculty, administration, and staff.

The Silberman School of Social Work’s aim is to encourage civic involvement and commitment to public service in New York City. Our student body, field agencies, and alumni make up the majority of the social work workforce in New York City’s public human service departments and non-profit organizations.
